Our First Speed Skating Camps Are Here

Apr 27, 2023

Update: We Have Pads!.

We're excited to open up registrations for the Cambridge Ice Arena's inaugural Speed Skating Introductory Camps!

The camps will be led by some of the UK's leading Short Track coaches and experts, who will be visiting Cambridge to help us kickstart this thrilling ice skating discipline.

We invite all skaters to come and experience Speed Skating with the Club on Cambridge ice for the first time.

When Are They?

Our camps will be held on Saturday 12th August and Saturday 26th August.

Update 31/7/23: We've changed the format of the evenings slightly - there will now be a single camp on each Saturday, starting at 18:00. Each camp will be between 2-3 hours. There is no change in price.
This paragraph originally read "There will be two ~2 hour camps on each evening: 18:00-20:00 and 20:00-22:00. The exact format and duration of the camps is still being determined."

Entry will be £18 per person per camp. Participants are welcome to attend multiple camps.

What Will I Be Doing?

During the camps, you will be introduced to the basic elements of speed skating, including:

  • Body position

  • Racing starts

  • Skating form in the straights and corners

  • Some fun races to tie it all together

  • Off-ice drills

  • and much more!

Experienced speed and fen skaters are welcome to attend as well! We'd love to have you involved with the future of Speed Skating at the Cambridge Ice Arena, and our guest coaches are sure to be able to challenge you too!

Skaters of all ages are welcome to attend. Under 18s will need to have a parent/guardian present at all times.

Please note that participants will need to be able to skate unassisted confidently (Skate UK Level 5 at a minimum).

I Don't Have Any Speed Skates

We will be doing our best to provide everyone with a pair of speed skates for the camp. Nevertheless, supplies will be limited - we are borrowing the skates from a number of extremely generous and supportive Speed Skating Clubs from across the country. Please follow the instructions below ASAP to allow us ample time to prepare and avoid any disappointment.

Should I Bring Anything Else?

We ask that all skaters also bring a pair of gloves and a helmet (a bicycle helmet is sufficient for these camps, but for speed skating a helmet without gaps is the norm). A pair of shin pads (the type used for football would be fine) is also recommended.

Sign Me Up!

To get involved, simply submit this form once for each skater!

If you're not already a member, we will follow up with a club membership form for you to submit. (Basic club membership is free!)

We will then add you to the registers for the camps you select on the form. You will receive a Coacha payment request for each session you'd like to attend via email. Please complete the payment(s) as soon as possible.

Our hope is to build a Speed Skating Club that trains regularly off the back of these camps, but that can only happen with your support!

Please come along and take advantage of this incredible opportunity to try out Speed Skating in a fun and welcoming environment!

P.S. If you've never experienced Short Track before, check out this video of some of Team GB's top skaters for a tiny taste of the sport! We hope you'll join us and give it a go!
