2023-24 Competitive Season: In Review

Jun 2, 2024

Though our club has been running since 2022, it was the 2023-24 competitive season that saw our teams take the big step up to the national competitive stage for the first time.

The culmination of a years work, we're so proud with the early successes we've seen as a club and community. Being an ice skating community centred around a relatively new rink, local experience in disciplines such as Synchro and Short Track was minimal. Through the determination of skaters, coaches, parents, volunteers and with generous support from the Cambridge Ice Arena, other clubs and British Ice Skating, we've had a spectacular season.

We can't wait to build on these achievements!

Synchro

Team Enigma

Our Beginner team made their debut competitive performance at Skate London 2023 with their Stayin' Alive/Saturday Night Fever programme, scoring 18.91. This put them in last place, but they were undeterred. Thrilled that they'd completed their first competition, they found new resolve for the Steel City Trophy.

In the months that followed, they worked diligently to improve their elements - not forgetting to have fun in the process!

It all paid off when March came around - their performance scoring 20.20 and earning them 5th place of 8!

Team Paradox

Our Adult team decided not to compete this season, and instead build their core synchro skills. They continue to train regularly for local exhibition events, and will consider competing in the future too.

Speed

Our Short Track club saw two of its skaters (Ugo and Jameel) enter their first competitions this season, with Ugo immediately qualifying for the British Championships held in January! Though building up a Cambridge contingent of competitive Speed Skaters was always the goal of our club when we set out to introduce Short Track at the Cambridge Ice Arena, for it to happen so soon was a excellent testament to the untapped potential of community, and the commitment of all involved to get us "to the start"! This wouldn't have be possible without the support of so many.

The majority of our speed skaters opted to focus on training for the whole of the season. Many of them are looking to the 2024-25 season with anticipation - there will be more next time!

If our team's exploits have inspired you to take up ice skating, for get more involved as an experienced skater, we'd love to hear from you! Please do reach out!
